HUD Adds Civil Rights Protections to Grant Programs
For the first time in its history, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will require grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals.
On June 7, HUD published a notice detailing the general requirements that will apply to all of the Department’s competitively awarded grant programs for Fiscal Year 2010.

Supreme Court Upholds University Non-Discrimination Policy
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Hastings College of Law at the University of California may deny official recognition and funding to any student club that violates its non-discrimination policy, as long as that policy is applied equally to all clubs.
The policy was challenged by Christian Legal Society (CLS), a student group that requires members to sign a Statement of Faith that, among other things, states that sexual activity should not occur outside of marriage and then only between a man and a woman.
HUD Awards $30 Million to HIV-AIDS Housing Programs
More than a thousand extremely low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS will continue to receive permanent housing as a result of $30.2 million in grants announced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
None of the announced grants were awarded to Sacramento or Northern California agencies, although grants were given to the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency ($1,430,000) and the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center in San Francisco ($508,420). The City of San Jose Housing Department also received a grant of $1,262,800.
