"Saving face can't make you safe. Talk about HIV" is the theme for tomorrow's sixth annual observance of National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

I am an Asian American who has seen the stigma and silence around HIV in my community, so this theme and the day itself have particular meaning for me.

8-Year Old Boy Kicked Out of Catholic School Because He Has Lesbian Moms

An 8-year old Catholic boy became the latest casualty in his church's war against same-sex marriage when the third-grader was kicked out of his Massachusetts elementary school after administrators learned his parents are lesbians.

Administrators of St. Paul Elementary, a private Roman Diocese Catholic school in Hingham, Massachusetts, withdrew the student's admission this week after they learned the boy's parents are lesbians.

Equality California Presents Sacramento Equality AwardsTed Ross

Equality California held their annual Sacramento Equality Awards celebration at the Citizen Hotel on Tuesday, May 18 with a ceremony honoring the work of Sacramento activist Ted Ross, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and Bishop V. Gene Robinson.

“We are truly fortunate to have stellar leaders working tirelessly to secure equal rights and protections for the LGBT community,” said Geoff Kors, EQCA Executive Director. “Today we applaud the work of some of our most enduring champions of equality, including Assembly Speaker Pérez, Bishop V. Gene Robinson, and Ted Ross. We also renew our commitment to continuing our collaboration with these inspirational leaders to advance full equality for LGBT Californians.”

Bishops Speak in Support of SB 906Senyonjo & Robinson

Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, of Uganda along with New Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson and Equality California Executive Director, Geoff Kors spoke in favor of Senate Bill 906 at a press conference called by Senator Mark Leno (D – SF) at the State Capitol on Tuesday, May 18.

Senate Bill 906, sponsored by Leno, reaffirms the freedom of the clergy to make faith-based decisions regarding which marriages they solemnize and further clarifies the distinction between civil marriage and religious marriage. It also clarifies that religious institutions would not lose their tax-exempt status in California if they refuse to officiate at a marriage that is contrary to their religious faith.
