You Can Change Their World
by David Heitstuman, Executive Director of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center
Thanks to people like, you more than 250 youth each week and 500 adults each month find safe, welcoming, affirming support at the Sacramento LGBT Community Center.
Whether they seek refuge from the streets or the rejection of family, friends, employers, or strangers, our staff and volunteers approach their needs with compassion and empower them to change the conditions of their world.
We recently met a homeless community member at the Center’s Lambda Lounge respite program who needed help getting a job. We were able to provide them a shower, food, and clothing appropriate for an interview. Our Community Resources staff assisted with their resume, role playing interview scenarios, and searching for openings.
With the Center's help, they found a part-time job and continue to work toward self-sufficiency. Every day, your support makes stories like this possible.
The Center has launched its 2016 Year-End Campaign. Our goal for 2017 is to meet the needs of an increasing number of LGBTQ people who walk through our doors, as well as expand our outreach and advocacy efforts to reach the hundreds of thousands of allies that can help create safer and more welcoming homes, workplaces, and social gathering spaces. You see, despite the legal protections provided LGBTQ people, we continue to see increases in hate crimes, denials of healthcare, job discrimination, and homelessness. More people are reaching out to us for help than ever before.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 by December 31st. If you help us get to that amount, you’ll help restore dignity to the lives of LGBTQ people most in need, as well as help us increase the understanding and value placed on LGBTQ lives throughout the region, making the activities of everyday life safer and more welcoming for us all.
Would you be willing to make a special year-end donation of $50, $100 or whatever you can afford to help us meet our goal? We simply can’t do it without you. Your support will make a real, lasting impact.
Please, click here to make your donation now. The lives of hundreds of homeless LGBTQ youth and adults in need are at stake.
Thank you for your continued support and friendship.
