Last Minute Theatre Queen Stocking Stuffers

By Chris Narloch

If you’re stumped for ideas on what to get the musical theatre fan in your life for Christmas, I’ve put together a sure-fire list of last-minute gift ideas.

These titles should be available either at Dimple Records locally or online from various digital music retailers.

The Band’s Visit

Starring Tony Shalhoub and Katrina Lenk, this is the original Broadway cast recording for the best-reviewed new show of the theatre season. “The Band’s Visit” will almost surely be nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award next year.

After a mix-up at the border, an Egyptian Police Band is sent to a remote village in the middle of the Israeli desert. The travelers are taken in by locals, and under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. The musical is adapted from a highly acclaimed foreign film from 2007.

“The Band’s Visit” is currently running on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on West 47th Street. To order the album and for more information, please visit or

SpongeBob SquarePants – The New Musical

One of my theatre queen friends recently saw this show in NYC and assures me that it is incredibly colorful, very entertaining and has a positive, underdog message that is not just for kids.

Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

“SpongeBob SquarePants – The New Musical” is now playing at the Palace Theater on Broadway, and this CD features the show’s one-of-a-kind original score with all-new songs written for the cast to perform by Cyndi Lauper, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, John Legend, Panic! At The Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., and Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, with additional lyrics and music by Jonathan Coulton and Tom Kitt.

A Christmas Story Live! Soundtrack

This album features music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Tony Award winners for the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” and lyricists of the Academy Award-winning La La Land song, “City of Stars.”

“A Christmas Story Live!” is inspired by the holiday classic feature film “A Christmas Story” and the Tony Award-nominated Broadway production “A Christmas Story: The Musical.”

The live television event, which premiered on FOX on Dec. 17, featured an all-star cast that included Maya Rudolph, Matthew Broderick, Jane Krakowski, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ana Gasteyer, David Alan Grier, Ken Jeong, and newcomer Andy Walken as Ralphie, who desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas.

Bebe Rexha opened “A Christmas Story Live!” with a performance of the new song “Count On Christmas” which was written specifically for the live musical event by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and Rexha’s recording is the opening song on the soundtrack album, which is now available in all digital and streaming formats.

Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater

Adapted from Vonnegut’s 1965 novel, this was the first musical written by the blockbuster team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken before their theater success with “Little Shop of Horrors” and their animated Disney hits “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.”

The CD’s 28-page full-color booklet includes complete lyrics, production photography, a synopsis and essays from director Michael Mayer and Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Group.

Kyle Riabko – Richard Rodgers Reimagined

This unusually good tribute CD features wonderful covers of Richard Rodgers songs by Kyle Riabko, the talented Broadway star of “Spring Awakening” and “Hair.”

Riabko brings his singular pop/rock sensibility to the classics Rodgers wrote with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II, performing the composer’s songs as they’ve never been heard before.

Rearranging them with a contemporary spin that further underlines their timelessness, Riabko turns his attention to such Rodgers compositions as “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” “My Favorite Things,” “Where Or When,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I Have Dreamed” and “My Funny Valentine,” among others.
