Local Musical Duo Carlos and Brennen Aim To Inspire

By Chris Narloch

Musical duo Carlos and Brennen hope to inspire local music fans with a yearlong series of concerts showcasing diverse and non-traditional musical works from composers around the globe.

The two accomplished African-American musicians, pianist Carlos M. Fuentes and clarinetist Brennen Milton, began playing as a duo in 2016, and they are taking a decidedly different approach to entertaining classical music lovers in the Sacramento region.

“We hope to bring a new awareness to non-traditional music,” says Brennen. “We aim to go beyond the well-known composers and pieces by choosing works that are fresh and new, both to us and our audiences. We will also feature original music we composed.”

The duo is based at the Sacramento Preparatory Music Academy (SPMA) in Midtown Sacramento, where they are currently enjoying a yearlong residency that they hope will highlight the experiences of minorities in the arts while conveying uplifting social messages.

Carlos and Brennen are excited to bring their music to a wider audience through their SPMA residency and hope to communicate the ideas of peace, tolerance, and unity through their artistry.

Both Carlos and Brennen earn their livelihoods as dedicated music instructors in the local community.

The duo will perform the second of four scheduled concerts—An American Music Celebration — on Friday, February 16, at 7 p.m. at the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts (CLARA) auditorium.
