Miranda Lambert Tears It Up At Golden 1 Center

By Chris Narloch

Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center was filled to the rafters on Thursday evening, as country fans from all around Northern California converged on the state-of-the-art venue to kick a little dirt off their boots during a stunning concert featuring headliner Miranda Lambert.

The sold-out show was so full in fact – with only a few scattered empty seats, probably due to the flu going around – that opening act Jon Pardi looked up at the folks making their way to seats in the uppermost sections of the Center and cautioned them to be careful on the steep stairs.

Pardi got the crowd worked up with a tight set of polished country rock that showcased his talented band, his own guitar playing, and a strong voice that cranked out hits such as “Head Over Boots” and “Dirt On My Boots.”

Pardi is a local-boy-makes-good success story. Born in nearby Dixon, the cowboy crooner was clearly proud to stand on the Golden 1 stage where he had seen Paul McCartney play, and the crowd roared when he mentioned his hometown roots.

The lineup was an interesting mix of bro-country rock from Pardi and Lambert’s brand of music, which takes traditional country to surprising places thanks to her adventurous musical taste and her sophisticated songwriting.

That talent for writing great lyrics was on full display during Lambert’s terrific two-hour set, which included most of her biggest hits -- plus several dynamite, lesser-known album tracks -- and a killer cover version of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”

Clever songs like “Automatic,” “Mama’s Broken Heart,” “We Should Be Friends” and “Vice” wowed the crowd with their vivid lyrical imagery, and the 34-year-old Lambert looked lovely in boots and black leather.

The singer had everyone’s arms waving back and forth during the uplifting “All Kinds of Kinds,” and the crowd was also on their feet  -- with camera phones glowing -- for Lambert’s exquisite tearjerkers, “The House That Built Me” and “Tin Man.”
