Experience “Symphonic Serenity” This Friday Evening

By Chris Narloch

Who isn’t stressed out by the end of the work week? This Friday, you can actually do something about it when a revolutionary new experience known as Symphonic Serenity comes to Sacramento for the first time.

Symphonic Serenity is an experiential project that combines the restorative effects of both music and silence. Guided by five-time ASCAP Award-winning conductor Eugene Castillo, and assisted by Sacramento-based cellist Susan Lamb Cook, audience members are invited to listen deeply to short excerpts of music followed by silence, repeating the process for approximately an hour and a half.

There is strong evidence that the music-silence experience can significantly mitigate perceived stress, and Symphonic Serenity's premise is that all of us can train ourselves to "interrupt" the chaos of the modern world, of pain and other stressors, by simply experiencing silence as an interruption to music.

The goal is to become comfortable with that juxtaposition of music followed by silence again and again, potentially “rewiring” our brains to let go of the stress that has been part of our DNA since prehistoric man developed the fight-or-flight mechanism to react to predators.

Symphonic Serenity can affect your daily life and lead to inner change, and this introductory Sacramento session is offered for a suggested donation of just $15, this Friday, June 14, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., in the Community Room of the Department of Human Resources Building, at 2450 Florin Road, in Sacramento.

For more information, call (323) 893-4900 or visit https://symphonic-serenity-with-susan-lamb-cook.eventbrite.com. Parking and security are available onsite.

Symphonic Serenity is part of the Adult Performing Series of the Los Angeles Public Library, which presents traditional classical performances as well as outreach programs to schools and community centers, including The Institute for Girls’ Development in Pasadena, CA.
