Hair-raising Horror Movies Come Home For Halloween

By Chris Narloch

What’s better than watching a scary movie on Halloween?

Luckily, there have been a number of excellent recent DVD releases aimed at horror movie fans, including 4K Ultra HD discs of John Carpenter’s original “Halloween” and also “The Evil Dead,” plus a 25th Anniversary version of my favorite Halloween flick, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Here are three other terrifying titles you can rent or stream or buy this Halloween season.

Hereditary

Movie fans were caught off guard by this chiller, which features unusually realistic and dramatic acting, especially by Toni Collette, who gives an Oscar-worthy performance as a grieving mother who goes off the deep end after her family is visited by two deaths and a horrifying secret.

Beast

Although it’s not technically a horror film, this superb thriller will have you on the edge of your seat thanks to its suspenseful love story starring a great Irish actress named Jessie Buckley as a troubled young woman whose bad-boy lover may or may not be a killer.

A Quiet Place

If you haven’t already seen this modern horror classic, I urge you to buy the movie so you can watch it every Halloween. Actor John Krasinski’s script (co-written with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods) and his direction are absolutely first-rate, and the film’s tale, of an isolated, rural family beset by hungry monsters that hunt by sound, is unique.
