Get “Something For The Boys” & More On CD

By Chris Narloch

If you’ve played the “Hamilton” CD so many times that your significant other and your friends and neighbors want to hire a hit-man, here are three newer cast recordings to check out when you get a chance.

Brigadoon

In addition to playing the Ocean Master in the “Aquaman” movie, the handsome actor Patrick Wilson is also a celebrated stage actor who can sing, which he does beautifully on the latest cast recording of “Brigadoon.”

The 2017 New York City Center production of this 1947

classic costarred the great Kelli O’Hara, one of the current queens of Broadway, who is in fine voice on the disc, as is the rest of the cast, which includes Stephanie J. Block and Robert Fairchild.

The Lerner and Loewe musical’s story involves two American tourists who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 years.

Songs from the show include “From This Day On,” “Almost Like Being In Love,” “The Heather On The Hill,” and “The Love Of My Life.”

Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical

There may be no greater shlock-rock release in the history of American popular music than “Bat Out Of Hell,” the head-scratching debut album from 1977 by the singer known as Meat Loaf.

That seminal ‘70s record (and its two “Bat Out Of Hell” sequels) inspired this stage musical, which has a book, music and lyrics by producer Jim Steinman, who was influenced by Richard Wagner, among others, to create the original “Bat Out Of Hell” album.

This lavish 2-disc cast recording of the new “Bat Out Of Hell” stage musical includes some of the most memorable power pop ballads of the rock era, including “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad,” “Paradise By The Dashboard Light,” “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All,” “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now,” and “I’ll Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That).

Something For The Boys

This new cast recording of a musical from 1943 by the late, great Cole Porter features rediscovered, original orchestrations performed by musical theater pros from today such as Danny Burstein, Andrea Burns, Philip Chaffin, and Edward Hibbert.

With music and lyrics by Porter and a book by Herbert Fields and Dorothy Fields, “Something For The Boys” follows the lives and loves of three cousins who inherit a Texas ranch next to a military base.

The “Something For The Boys” cast recording includes such songs as “Hey, Good Lookin’,” “He’s A Right Guy,” “I’m In Love With A Soldier Boy,” “There’s A Happy Land In The Sky,” and “Could It Be You?”

“Something For The Boys” is now available from PS Classics. “Brigadoon” and “Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical” are available from Ghostlight Records.
