Equality California Presents Sacramento Equality AwardsTed Ross

Equality California held their annual Sacramento Equality Awards celebration at the Citizen Hotel on Tuesday, May 18 with a ceremony honoring the work of Sacramento activist Ted Ross, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and Bishop V. Gene Robinson.

“We are truly fortunate to have stellar leaders working tirelessly to secure equal rights and protections for the LGBT community,” said Geoff Kors, EQCA Executive Director. “Today we applaud the work of some of our most enduring champions of equality, including Assembly Speaker Pérez, Bishop V. Gene Robinson, and Ted Ross. We also renew our commitment to continuing our collaboration with these inspirational leaders to advance full equality for LGBT Californians.”

Sacramento activist Ted Ross, a veteran leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS, received the Equality Community Leadership award.

Ross helped establish and sustain CARES, the Center for AIDS Research, Education and Services, one of only two comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment facilities of its kind in the entire country. Perez

Equality California honored Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez with the Equality Legislative Leadership Award for his exceptional leadership in the struggle for LGBT equality.

Speaker Pérez was unanimously elected by his Democratic colleagues to the Speakership, and he is the state’s first openly gay Speaker. He has been a longtime leader in the struggle for LGBT equality and is a vocal advocate for working people and for civil rights for all.

Bishop V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination, received the Equality Faith Leadership Award.
As a high-ranking member of the clergy, Bishop Robinson has advocated on the state, national and international level for equal protection under the law and for full civil marriage rights for LGBT individuals.

The awards ceremony was presented by AT&T and generously sponsored by Ben Patrick Johnson Foundation and Blue Angel Vodka. Similar awards are presented in Los Angeles and San Francisco recognizing individuals in those cities.

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender-rights advocacy organization in California. Over the past decade, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for LGBT individuals to a state with some of the most comprehensive civil rights protections in the nation. Equality California has passed over 60 pieces of legislation and continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.orgGroup
