Chico Shows Their Gay Pride in Pioneer Day ParadeChico Pride

By Gary V. Sereno-Regis
May 5, 2010 became a special day in my life as 15 of us marched the streets of Chico in support the LGTBQ community. It was a public statement and one that was very visible.

A few months ago, when the Chico Pride Fest's Board of Directors was first discussing marching in the Chico Pioneer Day's Parade, I was skeptical that any community members would march with us. Still, I dutifully sent out the invitations for everyone to come to the parade and either join us, or show up in support.

By Abbi Novotny

"For the times when the music dies, I want you to take my Violin arms and play all the words you want to say but can’t, here’s your chance. Hold this music box of truth to your ears to prove that words hold more harmonies than harm to me and enhance the music for us to dance to."

Hearings Held on Bill that Provides Tax Relief for Same Sex CouplesAssemblymember Kevin de León

by Boyce Hinman

Hearings have been held on AB 2735 that would protect some same sex couples from property tax increases on their home by the Assembly Revenue and Tax Committee. The hearings were held Monday, May 3, however a final decision on the bill, by the Committee, was put off until at least the week of May 9.

AB 2735, introduced by Assemblymember Kevin de León (AD 45), says that upon the death of one co-owner of property, the transfer of the deceased’s half of the property to the other co-owner, would not be a change of ownership. So, the death of one of the co-owners would not result in an increase in property taxes on the property.
