Rainbow Chamber Announces 3 Nominees for 2018 Business Leader of Yearrcc

The Sacramento Rainbow Chamber has announced three nominees for the 2018 Business Leader of the Year: Tina Reynolds of Uptown Studios; Paul Weubbe of Laughton Properties Inc. and Billy’s Farm; and Janet Smith of Lucky Buddy Petcare.

The Chamber’s Business Leader of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has contributed to the Chamber and demonstrated leadership in the LGBT and business communities. Honorees are chosen by a selection committee consisting of past honorees. Steven Walker of FastBreak Tech and Jason Russell of Russell CPAs shared the Business Leader of the Year honor for 2017. The three nominees will be recognized and the 2018 Business Leader announced at the Chamber’s annual scholarship and awards gala, Boas & Bowties, on Thursday, September 20, at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West. Sam Smith & Beth Ditto Turned Golden 1 Center Pink

If you were lucky enough to score tickets to Sam Smith’s sold-out show at Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center last Friday evening, Aug. 24, then you already know that Mr. Smith and Beth Ditto performed the California capital’s queer concert of the year.

Both artists are openly gay, and Ms. Ditto provided a ferociously soulful opening set that ranged from an impressive cover of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” – which she dedicated to the late Aretha Franklin -- to the 37-year-old singer’s own songs, which fuse soul, dance, and rock music to wonderful effect.

A Boy & His Wolf At IMAX

If you can get to Sacramento’s Esquire IMAX Theatre on K Street before it ends this Thursday, Aug. 23, I recommend you check out the new movie “Alpha,” a stunning big screen adventure about a young hunter who befriends an injured wolf during the Ice Age.

Presented in IMAX 3D, and set 20,000 years ago, “Alpha” is a feast for the senses that includes terrific music, gorgeous cinematography, superb performances, and a family-friendly plot.

New Movies Come Home - Stream Your Heart Out!

My movie picks for home viewing this month are an eclectic quartet of titles that promise something for everyone.

Included in the mix are comedy (“Book Club”), classic blaxploitation cinema (“Super Fly”), sci-fi (“How to Talk to Girls at Parties”) and a dramatic thriller (“You Were Never Really Here”).

LGBT Night at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Arrives

This August 18th Morgan McMichaels from RuPaul’s Drag Race and Sister Roma are discovering a Northern California tradition – the annual LGBT night at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo (just north of San Francisco).

Out at the Kingdom is on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 8 p.m. to midnight. It will be a night of fun rides and games, performances including Morgan McMichaels from RuPaul’s Drag Race, host Sister Roma from the infamous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, dance party music from Ray Rhodes, bar for those 21+, and more.
