Sacramento may be taking a year off from its traditional Farm-to-Fork Festival, but Outword certainly isn’t. Our new Farm to Fork Issue is fresh from the kitchen and we think it’s pretty delish! Here are some things to look for as you swipe through our latest issue:

What happened to Sacramento’s big Farm-to-Fork celebration? We dug around visitsacramento.org and found some info and summarized it for you, so don’t put away your fork just yet. Then we head up the road to Yuba River Ranch, where locally raised Wagyu beef makes the very short trip to the tables at Hard Rock Sacramento’s Council Oak Steaks & Seafood. Yum.

We also got a little nostalgic while looking at some old back issues of Outword. So, “When the Gays Found It First”looks back at a time when restaurants knew one very effective way to get a new place buzzing: get the gays in the door. Make them happy and boy will they spread the word. Just for grins, we included a very old “Eatin’ Out” restaurant list from 2006. There were some very familiar names on it. Anybody remember Lucca, Sweetwater, Dragonfly, The Broiler or Hangar 17? We sure do.

And because apparently wine shouldn’t have all the fun, we check out a couple of California olive oil clubs you might want to try (to go with that wine). Plus, Fred activates his taste buds and lets us in on the not-so-secret Ferrari Fisheries in West Sacramento for fresh, wild-caught fish.

Beyond the food, we report on another alleged anti-LGBTQ+ attack in Lavender Heights and the continuing concerns about safety in the neighborhood. And there’s some big news closer to home: Fred Palmer has announced he’ll retire as Executive Director of the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce at the end of the year. He will be turning his full attention to his ongoing role as publisher of Outword.

We wandered around the Rainbow Festival and took some great pics of happy people doing fun things, and we take a look ahead to the upcoming second Folsom Family Pride event.
Chris Narloch brings the entertainment with music from Harry Styles, Nick Jonas and Bruno Mars, plus four mini movie reviews, theatre stuff and more. Of course, Matthew Burlingame has a great rundown of fun things to do with his “Out & About” feature.

So, last but certainly not least, the Outword Pet Photo Contest is officially open and taking images! Just scan the QR code and upload an image and a caption. Your little hooligan could wind up as the cover model for our upcoming Pet Issue — and could win $100 for being their “manager.”

Now pour a glass of something local, tear off a hunk of crusty bread, drizzle some good olive oil and balsamic on a plate for dipping, and dig in.
