Congratulations to the new executive committee members of the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce. If you’re not familiar with the SRC, they’ve been supporting small LGBT and allied businesses in the Greater Sacramento area for nearly 20 years. More info on their new leadership is on page 4.
Another organization standing up for our community is PFLAG Sacramento. Read a letter from the PFLAG Sacramento President on page 5.
On page 8, Christopher Cabaldon and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation talk about Providing Entrepreneurship for the LGBTQ+ Community. On page 9, we’ve got a story on veteran Joseph Rocha (page 9) who is seeking a San Diego-Area Congressional seat.
You can add “The Guncle” to your summer reading list (book review on page 10). Bonus points if you know what “Guncle” means before you read the write up.
There’s more entertainment on page 11 with both virtual and in-person options from the Capital Stage and at the Sofia, and on page 13, Chris Narloch has some new music recommendations from two country queens and two club music kings.
Sacratomato Week celebrates the tastes of summertime now through July 25. Devour some of the delicious details on page 14. Light up your life with the Tiffany stain-glass lamp display currently at the Crocker Art Museum until September 12, and have yourself a Lin-Manuel Mirandafest (both stories on page 15).
Adorning our cover for this issue is the beautiful (also bad ass) Scar-Jo as Black Widow in the new female-led-cast movie. To give you context, it’s a sort of prequel to Avengers: Infinity War, minus the foxy Robert Downey, Jr. (sad face). However, if you want some male eye candy, go literally across the hall (they’re BOTH playing at Imax downtown!) and check out Henry Golding in Snake Eyes. Read both movie reviews on page 16.
Mark Wahlberg.
Did I get your attention? Good. He’s also in a new movie called Joe Bell (more info on page 17), but if you’d rather Netflix and chill catch Pray Away streaming beginning August 3rd.
And closing out this issue is a message of inclusivity that the Sacramento Midtown Association in partnership with WEAVE, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, Faces Nightclub, and Outword Media (that’s us!) is seeking to promote. Read about “PRIDE, Pronouns & Progress” on page 18.
As always, many thanks to the Outword Rainbow Fund supporters. Rumor has it we are planning a little soirée in celebration of all who helped us through a very rough time. More info on that coming soon.
Happy reading. Stay safe and stay cool out there!
