The 2-27-25 Issue is Out Now
We have an announcement to make:
For over 30 years we have brought you Outword Magazine in print, and also digitally for more than 15 years. This issue is significant for us because it will mark the first of many digital-only publications. With everything that is going on around us, we feel it is best to discontinue printing paper copies of the paper, especially since the majority of our readers are utilizing the online version to access content and see what the LGBTQ+ businesses have to offer.
These changes will, honestly, save Outword a lot of hard costs spent on the print job, rack maintenance and distribution, and allow us stay in business and pay our staff. We know that there are still fans out there that like to pick up, and leaf through an actual paper, but not only is this expensive, it’s also not environmentally friendly (not to mention most paper products come from Canada which will undoubtedly get more expensive). While we are admittedly a bit nervous about this (semi) new direction, we realize that the digital world has so much more to offer. We will be able to bring you more pages of content and it will allow us to be an even better voice for the Sacramento LGBTQ+ community. This is something we are very much looking forward to doing with you. Look for postcards around town with QR links to our latest publication. (Our goal is to have postcards in many more locations than we were able to fit the paper)
By clicking on the image above, you will be whisked away to our website where you can check out the latest issue, as well as back issues. For Free, and there is a link to support us through our Rainbow Fund, which is our reader-support fund where you can help us stay in business. We have been saying, and offering, two digital options for many years now, downloadable PDF or our super-cool Flip version hosted by ISSUU.com. So, as we mentioned earlier, more content is oh so possible, and this issue is a case in point. 31 pages. Yay! Our digital format will also give us previously unavailable creative freedom to do very cool things.
So what’s in this issue, you might ask?
Well, to start, on the cover you will see a fabulous promo shot from the Broadway Sacramento show “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” and the quick writeup is on page 19. It should be a “don’t miss” show!
It’s hard not to log some of the crazy-hateful things that are happening on a federal level, so we have tried to condense some of that info to help keep you informed as to what is happening to all of us. Check out “Bonta’s Been Busy” on page 12.
On page 6 we take a fresh look at how people self-identify these days, and we also look at our community’s ongoing economic influence.
We have several articles regarding Black History Month and we say farewell to Roberta Flack.
Christ Narloch takes a look at some Oscar potentials, “60 Years of the Mustang,” and four new movies that are playing now. You can find the movies on page 18.
Fred activated his taste buds at Sherman’s Deli in Palm Springs and gave us a blurb to tell us about it, as well as a great pic of his Patty Melt. Yum.
Matthew Burlingame’s “Out and About” column gets a fresh new look on page 21. The Outword event calendar is on page 22. Our latest “Question on the Street” is on page 24 and pages 26 and 27 feature some memes captured from Facebook since the last issue.
Notice the page number? All in all there are 11 extra pages added to this issue, and you get it all for the same low price – of Free.
So, we hope you truly enjoy this digital version of Outword. Again, as mentioned above, look for postcards around town with QR links to our latest publication. Our goal is to have postcards in many more locations than we were able to fit the paper.
