Welcome Back, to The Chicks!
There are few groups, of any kind, that have taken the brunt of the right-wing spin machine, and survived it, like The Chicks (formerly known as The Dixie Chicks). Their whole world changed because of one, simple First Amendment-authorized comment that was made onstage while performing in Europe. The right pounced! They were eager to give their base something to hate, a common goal to divert attention away from the failing president. Sound familiar? Well this was almost 20 years ago, and while the playing field was comprised of different players, but we were certainly forewarned about things to come. Fortunately, the women of The Chicks emerged from this attack stronger, more aware and more creative than ever. To this day they are a force to be reckoned with politically and musically, and all the while a creative team that isn’t afraid to sing the truth. That is why they grace (beautifully) the cover of our newest issue. Check out what they are up to on page 16.
This issue of Outword also collects several essays about the changing world around us, as we all try to grasp at the best way for all of us to move forward.
Of course here was still room for some fun and entertaining stuff. We are proud to feature a story about a local icon, talent and all-around hero, Joyce Mitchell. Matthew Burlingame sits down with her and talks about Capital City AIDS Fund, but more importantly, her well-deserved, new Emmy awards. You can read all about it on page 10. Congrats Joyce from everyone here at Outword Media!
Moving further into this issue, our very own mega-talent, Chris Narloch, has been busy with new entertainment stuffs that you can enjoy right now, at home. There are documentaries, choral groups performing virtually, new Blu-rays of old classic movies and, of course, new music.
Just for fun we threw in a heart-warming story about a woman’s tireless journey to gain her freedom and in doing so, save the planet and find every rescue dog a forever home! Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but be sure to check out how our friend, Anne paid off her lovely home, and how she celebrated (safely) the amazing event.
Again, just for fun, we asked one of our readers to provide us with eight pictures, of her choosing, from her phone’s camera, that were taken since March. SIP pics that she thought others might enjoy. Since Outword is not able to go to “events” and take pics, we thought this might be a fun way to let our readers share. So, if you would like to share eight images off your phone, please do! No themes, no contest, no dirty pics. However, we would love to see what you have been up to! Email your high res pics and name info to: firstname.lastname@example.org We will feature your images in an upcoming issue of Outword online.
There you have it. News, Politics, Entertainment and Just for Fun, all wrapped up in our digital only issue that we are making available for your enjoyment, all for free – like we always have. Click your way to the PDF or the online version and spend some time with us. Let us know what you think – we would love to hear from you.
Take good care, and be safe.
