Holiday Shopping Two 2020

Special Issue – Holiday Shopping Two 2020

Typically, this time of year would be a time of cheerful celebration, but it is with a heavy heart we announce the death of Laurie McBride. She passed away after lingering stroke complications on Friday, December 4th. We will be paying tribute to her in our December 22 issue, but wanted to immediately acknowledge the loss of one of our community’s groundbreakers. Our thoughts are with her wife of 35 years, Donna Yutzy, as well as the rest of her family.

Speaking of family, you, our readers are our family, and we appreciate your continuing support during this difficult time in our country’s history. We do what we can to keep you engaged and entertained, and with that comes Part Two of our Annual Holiday Gift Guide!

We want to direct special attention to the WEAVE article on page 11, and make sure you read about their Winter Wonderland donation drive taking place between now and December 19th. WEAVE is looking for new, unwrapped items (especially gift cards for fast food and clothing) to make sure needy families have something to celebrate the holiday. Normally Outword helps supplement the donations with a toy drive, but this year it is just not feasible. We hope you choose to donate to the Winter Wonderland instead.

Also, on page 11 is information on our weekly Holiday Giveaway! Sign up on our email list and you could win a gift card, products or services from one of our advertisers, or even cash! Congrats to our winner this week, Allison D!

Since a lot of shopping will be taking place online this year and time is running out, we’ve got your back with oodles of prospective presents beginning on page 12 and continuing on page 13. Chris Narloch has gifts for movie lovers, and there’s also a gift idea that supports the performing arts.

Maybe a small brunch with your housemates or partner is your cup of tea? Holiday brunch ideas are on page 14, and MORE gift ideas (the FABULOUS kind) from Mikey Rox are featured on pages 18 & 19!

While you’re wrapping up presents, you can check out Chris Narloch’s holiday Netflix recommendations (page 20), OR listen to any one of the CDs he’s reviewed for you on page 22 (Hello…new Sam Smith album, yes, please!). After the presents are wrapped, cozy up under a blanket with one of the books Chris mentions on page 24. At this point we’re all a little low on entertainment, but not to worry, there are movie recommendations on page 25 that are a must for queer quarantine.

On that note, please continue to do what you can to stay safe and sane, and whatever you celebrate, Happy Holidays!

Please join us THIS FRIDAY at 5:30pm for Outword’s Monthly Zoom Happy Hour (LAST ONE OF THIS YEAR)! Let’s make merry and raise a cup of holiday cheer!
